02Common questions
Asked before the first call.
Short answers to the questions most people have before they get in touch. Anything else, ask.
- How quickly will I hear back?
- Within one business day, by email or phone, whichever you asked for. The first conversation is a thirty-minute call about the business and the state of the records.
- Who actually does the work?
- The person who scopes the engagement does the work. Nothing is passed to a junior you have not met, and there is no account manager between you and the ledger.
- Do you take clients outside the Greater Toronto Area?
- Yes. Most work is done remotely, and the practice has filed in Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Meetings are by video unless you are nearby.
- Do you prepare personal tax returns for people who do not own a business?
- Yes. Employees, retirees, landlords, the self-employed and newcomers to Canada. The personal tax checklist under Resources lists what to gather.
- What does it cost?
- Fees are fixed in a written engagement letter before any work starts. Ongoing work is a monthly fee, projects are quoted as a whole, and personal returns are priced per return. A quote follows a short look at the books, because guessing helps nobody.
- What do you need from me to get started?
- Read-only access to the accounting system and bank feeds, last year's returns and statements, and authorisation to deal with the CRA on your behalf. Onboarding is a checklist and usually takes two to three weeks.
- What happens with my previous accountant's files?
- With your authorisation we request the prior-year returns, working papers and any open items from them directly. Professional courtesy usually makes this straightforward, and you do not need to be in the middle of it.
- Our books are years behind. Can you fix that?
- Yes. Catch-up work is scoped as a project with a fixed end date, then handed into a monthly routine. Where prior returns were filed incorrectly, they are amended.
- Do you perform audits or review engagements?
- No. Those require a licensed public accountant. The practice prepares the year-end file your auditor or reviewer works from, and can issue compiled financial statements.
- How do I send you documents securely?
- Not through the contact form. Once an engagement letter is in place we agree a secure channel for slips, statements and anything with an account number or social insurance number on it.
